According to Ian Sinclair sales of organic food are now worth more than £1.12bn, with the market growing at twice the rate of the general grocery market. Sales of organic eggs are riding high on this wave of growing popularity.
This is the reason why Ian, whose 480-acre organic farm breeds cattle and sheep, saw an opportunity earlier this year for organic eggs. With a better, healthier taste, organic eggs are increasingly being sought after.
Ian currently has a flock of 3,000 Lohmann Brown chickens, all with the freedom to range outside. The eventual aim is to increase to 9,000 as demand increases. Fed on a diet of organic wheat, peas, soya and prairie meal, the chickens produce 1,680 dozen eggs a week which are transported to the family-run Farmlay Eggs, Fraserbugh, where they are graded and packed and distributed, under the Farmlay label.
The eggs are produced to freedom food andlion quality standards.
