Whisky history

Barrogill’s name comes from its connection to The Castle of Mey, which was built between 1561 and 1572 by George Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness. Later known
as Barrogill Castle, it remained in the Sinclair family until 1889.

When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother first saw Barrogill Castle in 1952, it was in
a state of disrepair. But falling for its isolated charm and hearing that it was about to be abandoned, she declared: “Never! It’s part of Scotland’s heritage. I’ll save it.” She bought the castle later that same year, began restoring it and changed its name back to The Castle of Mey.

The Castle of Mey is now managed by The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. HRH The Prince
Charles, Duke of Rothesay, is a regular visitor to the Castle.
